BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- More than half of Iraqis in a survey done primarily in March and early April said their nation will be better off in five years because of the U.S.-led invasion, but 55 percent said they had an unfavorable opinion of the United States.
...
Despite their struggles and the challenges of forming a new government, 63 percent of respondents said they were convinced Iraq will be better off in five years, while 20 percent said they were unsure, according to results released Thursday. Sixty-five percent said they believed their immediate locale will be better off, the poll found.
However, at the time of the survey, a majority were not fans of the United States or Britain.
Fifty-five percent had an unfavorable opinion of the United States, and 56 percent had an unfavorable view of Britain.
While 73 percent of respondents said a new government should have freedom of religion, 58 percent opposed the separation of religion from the political government.
Asked whether Iraqi women should have more freedom than before the invasion, 53 percent of respondents said they felt women should take a more traditional role than before, and 26 percent said they felt women should be allowed more freedom.
I can't tell if crap like this is due more to the unbelievable stupidity of the "journalists" at CNN or due to arch-conservatives at Time-Warner, who, when not rolling in their Scrooge McDuck like vaults of hardly earned dollar bills are sucking George Bush's knee-caps.
I don't even know what the point of this poll is. The headline is half triumphant--MORE IRAQIS OPTIMISTIC--half grim--DISLIKE U.S.
The point of invading Iraq was to disarm Saddam Hussein of the Weapons of Mass Destruction with which he was imminently(oh, yeah, that's what you meant)threatening the United States and on the verge of giving to his very good friends, the tearists.
Only, we invaded, got 700 Americans killed, thousands crippled and disfigured, spent nearly 200 billion dollars on this fiasco, and then discovered what half of America already knew--Saddam had no weapons of mass destruction and the tearists hated Saddam's guts almost as much as he hated their guts.
So, then, the new story became that, regardless of what Bush said, the real reason we invaded was to liberate the Iraqi people from tyrany and institute a democracy that would be friendly to the west and which would facilitate a domino effect resulting in a modern, moderate, secularist Middle East.
How fucking stupid.
And, now, again, after the WMDs have proven to be baseless, and the invasion has actually increased the number of terrorists not only in Iraq, but has served as a recruitment tool for terrorists all over the Middle East, now we have after great loss of life and limb and money this poll. After a fucking year.
More than half of Iraqis think life will be better; more than half have an unfavorable opinion of the United States. Nearly 60% oppose seperation of church and state. More than half feel that women should take a more "traditional" role--which is, of course, living in hazmat suits and getting a state sanctioned asswhipping for showing an ankle or opening their mouths.
Which means what?
It means they're happy Saddam's gone, now get the fuck out. They hate us, too. And, no, they have no interest in being a moderate, western friendly society. And, no, while they're at it, they have no more interest in human rights than the fucking taliban.
Congratulations, Joe Lieberman and other Republicans. That is money and blood well fucking spent. And nearly as surprising as the sun rising each morning. That's just fucking great.
