Mark Sanchez threw four touchdown passes, Joe McKnight rushed for 105 yards on 12 carries, and the top-ranked Trojans crushed No. 5 Ohio State 35-3 Saturday night in a matchup of two of college football's most successful programs.
We'll have a new No. 1 in college football thanks to Oregon State's stunning 27-21 victory over top-ranked USC on Thursday night.
So who will it be?
Yes. Who could it be? USC destroyed and humiliated Ohio State on national television. Oregon State manhandled USC for 30 minutes--I mean, really, Oregon State was up 21 to zero at half--and managed to beat them in the end.
Now that Oregon State has defeated USC, who destroyed Ohio State, who can we possibly imagine might be the best team in college football?
I don't know. Anyone?
The Nittany Lions shoved aside the distraction created by the suspension of two defensive starters, then rolled over Oregon State, 45-14 on Saturday….
What was supposed to be Penn State's toughest nonconference game of the year turned into a laugher early. Oregon State fell to 0-2 for the first time since 2004…
Two plays later, Royster went off tackle for an easy 28-yard touchdown run to give Penn State a 21-0 lead with 14:41 left in the second quarter.
Three-plus minutes later, Royster got terrific lead blocks from receiver Brett Brackett and fullback Dan Lawlor to score easily from 4 yards out on a sweep for a 28-0 lead.
I was at the Oregon State game and it was a laugher. At Beaver Stadium, Oregon State's offensive line, which just pushed USC this way and that for hundreds of yards, looked like a box of kittens someone dumped on a highway at rush hour.
Oregon State's defense, which blanked the mighty men of Troy for 30 minutes, gave up 35 points to Penn State in the same amount of time. And, really, Penn State could have scored a hundred points if they hadn't put in their second and third string players for the entire second half of the game.
I don't know what to say. For four weeks, I've been asking every Nittany Lion I know: Is this the Second Coming of the 1994 team or are we just watching the weekly waxing of some really horrible patsies?
Well, no doubt, they waxed a bunch of patsies.
But one of them just beat USC.
And Penn State hasn't just waxed their patsies. They've waxed them like their performance was the final cut in an NCAA educational film entitled, "How To Wax Your Patsies".
I can't talk about it. I already have. But I can't. This team can run the Big Ten. And they can stomp the living Bejesus out of any team in the country.
If Joe doesn't elect to shut down the offense in Madison or Columbus. Like he's done for the last nine years at least.
Joe, keep it together. Hike up those diapers. Go for the glory.
One more time.
You put together an awesome team.
Beat everyone and go out the greatest coach of the greatest team that ever played the game.
