GOP Declares Accusing A President Of Lying Is Simply Wrong; Hopes America Slept Through The Nineties
WASHINGTON , Sept. 29 — The House committee hearing began as a serious discussion about the coming elections in Afghanistan. It ended in insults, so partisan and personal that the committee chairman expressed relief upon adjournment.
Deputy Secretary of State Richard L. Armitage told the House International Relations Committee that he expected the Taliban to try to disrupt the elections in Afghanistan "perhaps even by attempting a large-scale attack on election day itself," Oct. 9.
…
The mood seemed to change when Representative Robert Menendez, Democrat of New Jersey, seized on President Bush's declaration in Ohio last week that "as a result of the United States military, the Taliban is no longer in existence."
So, Mr. Menendez asked Mr. Armitage, "did you fail to give the president a briefing that the Taliban is still in existence?"
…
That was too much for Representative Henry J. Hyde, the Illinois Republican who heads the committee. He said that "calling the commander in chief a liar by every hour on the hour" was simply wrong, and was helpful to "the other side," by which he appeared to mean America's terrorist enemies.
Henry Hyde thinks that calling the president a liar is simply wrong???
Gosh, I thought Henry Hyde was the guy who thought that when the president said anything that wasn’t true to the American people—even if it involved a personal matter--the people’s trust had been betrayed and it was grounds for impeachment!
Judiciary Committee Chairman Henry J. Hyde (R-Ill.), who oversaw the two-month inquiry that led to this day's historic debate, said Clinton's actions were not a private matter but a direct assault on his oath to uphold the nation's laws. "The compact has been broken," Hyde said. "The people's trust has been betrayed."
I also thought Henry Hyde felt criticism of an untruthful president—hell, even impeachment—was not only “helpful” but it was our moral obligation. It was our national obligation to the world!
Hyde and other Republicans rejected the grievance, noting that impeachment proceedings were held against President Richard M. Nixon while U.S. troops were still fighting in Vietnam. "We felt the quicker we could go ahead, the sooner we could show the world that our democracy works," Hyde said, triggering derisive noise from the Democratic side of the chamber.
And remember the difference here: Hyde and other Republicans were calling Clinton a liar by every hour on the hour for making a misleading statement about getting a blowjob.
They thought that was so important that a twice elected president should be removed from office.
And these same fucking weasels are now saying that it’s just wrong to call the president a liar for making a misleading statement about Afghanistan? For making misleading statements about Iraq? Where Americans are being killed?
How does anyone take Republicans seriously anymore?
Who takes them seriously? Everyone. Because we are all scared shitless. These f****** clowns invade people's lives, threaten them, and cause people to lose their jobs. At this point, it is only their jobs; but, no one doubts but that the implication is there that more could happen. They are crazy. They are taking away our civil rights, more every day. It seems more like Nazi Germany that I can believe it ever could, in this the country of my birth. The media is absolutely cowed. The few honest congressman left are cowed. All that is left is the bull. I hate them and feel utterly powerless.
